Being based in the horse capital of the world, the team here at PureUV is no stranger to a day of horse racing at Keeneland and recognize the industry’s importance to the city of Lexington and its surrounding areas. We think there is an opportunity to connect UV technology with the horse industry to not only make horse farms safer for the humans that work at them but also provide a cleaner environment for the horses as well.

UV Sanitization for Offices and Showrooms

First and foremost, there are two immediate “human-centric” applications of UVGI in the horse industry: sanitize high traffic and high touch areas such as offices and showrooms with mobile room UV sterilizers (MRSs) and eliminate bacteria, mold, and viruses from building HVAC systems through commercial UV light ventilation.

MRSs may be placed in any room that needs air and surface disinfection and the system’s UV lamps can disinfect a room in just minutes. To ensure buildings have clean HVAC systems and pathogen free air, the installation of UV lamps into HVAC systems will eliminate 99.9% of bacteria, viruses, and mold from the air being passed through the HVAC unit providing cleaner air to breathe as well as reducing the need to service the HVAC unit’s coils that often leak after prolonged exposure to untreated air.

UV Sanitization for Horse Stable Biosecurity

Where UV light can help the horses lies in the issues that horse farms face every year: infectious diseases that are unique to equine animals. Diseases transmitted through aerosolized pathogens that commonly affect horse farms include Equine Influenza (“Flu”), Equine Herpesvirus (“EHV”), and Streptococcus Equi (“Strangles”). While there is little research on UVC light’s disinfecting ability on equine specific strains of these diseases, there is considerable evidence that UVC is effective at inactivating viruses, bacteria, and fungi in general, as well as common forms of influenza and streptococcus.

MRSs are a convenient, portable way to expose UV light to enclosed areas where horses frequent and are likely to spread the diseases mentioned above. PureUV’s MRSs were built with the equine industry in mind and having them intermittently placed in unoccupied horse stalls, quarantine facilities, and high traffic barn locations can help eliminate aerosolized and surface pathogens that are easily spread through human to horse and horse to horse contact.

UV light (via a MRS or wand) can also be used in tandem with the physical cleaning of grooming tools, tack, and feed buckets to ensure all instruments are free of bacteria and viruses and do not serve as carriers of diseases when used on multiple horses.

We at PureUV believe UV light can be beneficial for the horse industry from the office to the stable, providing a cleaner, safer working environment for the humans and horses that occupy your farms.
